Historia:
Los jugadores toman el control de Claris o Elliot, dos niños que viven en la ciudad de Twin Seeds. En sus sueños, entran en el mundo de Nightopia, donde todos los sueños humanos se producen. Una personaje malvado conocido como Wizeman, está consiguiendo poder para dominar el mundo de los sueños. Ambos niños deben intentar salvar Nightopia aliándose con NiGHTS, un habitante de Nightopia que se rebeló contra Wizeman.

En Nightopia, los distintos aspectos positivos de las personalidades de los personajes son representadas por esferas brillantes de diferentes colores conocidas como "Ideya". Aunque cada personaje soñador empieza cada nivel con cinco Ideya, los esbirros de Wizeman le roban cuatro y los protagonistas solo conservan el Ideya rojo, el que simboliza el valor. Los niños se acercan entonces a un altar donde está NiGHTS bailando y se fusionan con él para que les ayude a recuperar los Ideya robados, que están encerradas en una especie de cárcel flotante pero fija. NiGHTS debe entonces recuperar como mínimo 20 bolas azules que hay desperdigadas por el mapa para poder romper la cárcel y recuperar el Ideya, habrá que hacer esto en cuatro circuitos dentro del mismo mapa para poder completar el nivel y acceder a la lucha con el jefe final característico para cada escenario.

Personajes: La historia se desarrolla bajo los tres protagonistas: Claris, Elliot y NiGHTS.

Claris Sinclair (クラリス・シンクレア) Claris es una niña de 14 años (15 según la versión japonesa) que vive en la ciudad de Twin Seeds. Su gran sueño es ser cantante por lo que comienza en una audición para el musical hecho para el centenario conmemorativo de la ciudad.

La primera prueba le salió bien pero los problemas llegaron en la segunda ese mismo día. Claris permaneció asustada y quieta delante del micrófono, deslumbrada por el mismo proyector que la había iluminado la primera vez. Sus rodillas comenzaron a temblar, su garganta se secaba, y su voz comenzaba a fallar. Además la luz que la enfoca le impidía ver la cara de los jueces observándola. Aunque tendría que esperar hasta la tarde para conocer los resultados, Claris ya había perdido toda la confianza y la esperanza, sintiendo que perdió la oportunidad de convertir en realidad su sueño.

La escena se repite en su sueño de aquella noche. Vuelve a estar frente a los jueces, pero los miedos que guarda en su subconsciente pronto afloran. Cuando la luz le ilumina ella se fija en sus defectos físicos y su inexperiencia como cantante, a la vez que dentro de ella una voz le comienza a decir que todo el mundo se reirá de ella. Mientras la voz interior sube progresivamente su volumen, Claris escapa del escenario corriendo porque no es capaz de aguantarlo. Entonces encuentra una capilla maravillosa donde NiGHTS está capturado.

Elliot Edwards (エリオット・エドワーズ) Elliot también tiene 14 años (15 según la versión japonesa) y vive en Twin Seeds. Es muy inteligente y hace bien casi todo lo que se propone, especialmente en el caso de su deporte favorito, el baloncesto. Tiene un estilo general muy peculiar que lo hace objeto de admiración por sus compañeros y demás gente, es como su sueño hecho realidad.

Una noche, durante su sueño, los sueños de Elliot están repitiendo un incidente que le había pasado esa misma tarde. Estaba jugando como normalmente un partido de baloncesto con sus amigos cuando llegaron unos chicos mayores que él que le quitaron el balón con facilidad e hicieron un mate, poniendo final al respeto que sus amigos le tenían. En el sueño, Elliot vive una y otra vez la humillación que le produjo el acontecimiento. Está jugando contra alguien que piensa que nunca le puede ganar, sin poder esconderse.

Entonces se enfrenta a las criaturas de Nightmare mientras su sueño repite la humillación. Elliot corre intentando escapar del terrible miedo cuando el mundo brilla de repente y así entra en el mundo de Nightopia. Elliot se gira para poder observar si todavía le persiguen, mientras contempla el extraño lugar lentamente. Después encuentra a NiGHTS, un extraordinario ser en una preciosa capilla que nunca antes había visto.

NiGHTS NiGHTS es un Nightmaren único creado por el mismo Wizeman para convertirse en su mano derecha. Tiene la inquietud típica de los Nightmarens pero su capacidad para volar excede a la de los originales. Por rebelarse contra él, Wizeman le lanza un hechizo que lo sella en el espacio de un sueño.

Sus otras cualidades, además del excelente vuelo acrobático, también tiene la habilidad necesaria para realizar paraloops: cuando NiGHTS dibuja un círculo en el aire crea un agujero que transporta a lo que se encuentre dentro a otra dimensión si se trata de una criatura, o lo atrae para sí mismo si es un objeto. Además es capaz de cambiar de forma ya que no se rige por las leyes físicas normales, esto le permite navegar por debajo del agua o sobre el hielo sin ningún problema. Esto hace que tenga tanto sexo masculino como femenino a la vez.

El propio sueño de NiGHTS es poder salir del hechizo de Wizeman y poder volver a volar en libertad.

Sistema de juego Las características propias de este juego se centran en el vuelo de NiGHTS. El movimiento es natural y fluido; múltiples movimientos pueden ser hechos y ligados entre sí casi sin límites con un sistema de control sencillo. Muchas de las copias del juego venían con un nuevo gamepad analógico, el 3D Control Pad, uno de los primeros analógicos en salir para las videoconsolas caseras.

Además del modo normal de avanzar en la historia, el juego también incorpora un complejo sistema de vida artificial; llamado "A-Life" (de artificial life en inglés), que permite evolucionar, cuidar y disfrutar con los Nightopians; un sistema de puntuación, que se basa en la velocidad y control para manterner largos combos y conseguir así un mayor número de puntos; y un modo desbloqueable para dos jugadores, uno contra otro.

Gráficos y tiempo Lo primero que llama la atención del juego es su entorno tridimensional, en el que los niños se pueden mover en cualquier dirección para explorar el mapa e interactuar con los Nightopians y sus huevos. El único movimiento especial que poseen es un triple salto con el que alcanzar los lugares más elevados. El problema es que a los treinta segundos de empezar el nivel sin haber conocido a NiGHTS, un despertador comienza a perseguir a los niños por el sueño hasta que los alcanza, en dicho momento se despierta el personaje, se acaba la noche y se falla la misión.

Cuando el niño llega al altar donde se encuentra NiGHTS, el control pasa al misterioso ser y una cuenta atrás de 120 segundos comienza. El entorno tridimensional se conserva pero ahora el movimiento está limitado a una serie de planos dimensionales en los que nos podemos mover con libertad pero sin poder escapar directamente de ellos. Si mientras se maneja NiGHTS, éste recibe algún tipo de daño, se descontarán cinco segundos al tiempo total. En cuanto el medidor de tiempo llegue a cero, y por tanto no se consiguió el objetivo de obtener el Ideya o de retornar al altar, NiGHTS desaparecerá en medio de su vuelo y el niño que estemos manejando caerá al suelo. Cualquier bola azul que NIGHTS llevara en el momento de acabarse el tiempo, se desperdigará por el mapa, obligando al niño a recoger las suficientes para destrozar la cárcel, hacerse con el Ideya (si aún no se había hecho) y retornar al altar donde contínua bailando NiGHTS: todo esto mientras el reloj despertador lo persigue amenazando el final del sueño. Como curiosidad, cabe añadir que si se acabase el tiempo antes de haber recuperado la Ideya correspondiente a la ronda y se vuelve al altar para intentar de nuevo la sintetización con NiGHTS, este no estará bailando, sino que estará flotando en el mismo en posición de descanso.

Christmas NiGHTS Christmas NiGHTS es una expansión del juego original, que aunque no requería éste para poder jugar, los poseedores del original obtenían un par de utilidades para poder disfrutar más de su NiGHTS Into Dreams....

Fue sacado a la venta en diciembre de 1996 en Japón como parte de un paquete navideño de Sega Saturn. El juego se regalaba junto a otros como Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition, además de venir como regalo junto a ciertos números de la revista oficial Sega Saturn Magazine y Next Generation Magazine. En el caso de los CD-ROMS que acompañaban a la Sega Saturn Magazine, no se daba la pequeña caja de cartón para guardarla sino una transparente de plástico. El juego también podía ser alquilado en Blockbuster Video por toda América. En el resto de Europa, no fue incluido con la revista oficial ya citada hasta diciembre del año siguiente, 1997.

El disco de Christmas NiGHTS contenía una demo jugable de uno de los primeros niveles del juego, Spring Valley. Al contrario que en el original, podía ser jugado tanto con Elliot como con Claris, y era una versión inversa ya que se alteraron los elementos siguiente una simetría de espejo. El juego empleaba el reloj interno de la Sega Saturn para cambiar el decorado del juego dependiendo de la fecha. Cuando dicho reloj llegaba al 1 de diciembre, el normalmente color verde del escenario se convertía totalmente en nieve blanca. El diseño general del nivel adoptaba también un estilo navideño, donde las cajas se convertían en regalos de navidad, los Nightopians se vestían como los elfos de Santa Claus, las cárceles de las Ideya se convertían en árboles de Navidad, etc.

También existían muchos otros extras desbloqueables, que le permitían al jugador experimentar con las diferentes canciones o su sistema "A-Life", modos de juego extra como una carrera contra el reloj en uno de los circuitos o la posibilidad de manejar a la mascota de Sega Sonic the Hedgehog.

Curiosidades
Reacción Cuando fue lanzado a la venta, NiGHTS Into Dreams... copó las listas de ventas de la Sega Saturn pero no consiguió atraer al gran público que consiguieron Super Mario 64 de la Nintendo 64, o Crash Bandicoot para la Playstation, ya que ambos fueron publicados en las mismas fechas aproximadamente. La mayoría de las críticas de las revistas especializadas en la Sega Saturn alabaron al juego, pero aquellas que se dedicaban a varias plataformas fueron más negativas.

De cualquier manera, el juego es hoy en día tratado como un clásico, y debido a su calidad y disponibilidad es uno de los títulos más recomendados para los jugadores que empiezan colecciones de juegos de Sega Saturn. NiGHTS suele aparecer en las listas de los mejores juegos de la historia en diversas páginas web y revistas. En una encuesta a los lectores de la revista Computer and Video Games en enero de 2000, apreció en décimoquinto lugar en una lista de los "100 mejores juegos" (justamente detrás de Super Mario 64). Otro ejemplo de la progresiva evolución de las críticas del juego se puede ver en la revista Edge: en su crítica original en 1996 le dio "solo" un 8 sobre 10, pero en el número de octubre de 2003 el personal de la revista colocó a NiGHTS en su lista de los diez mejores juegos de plataformas.

Cómics NiGHTS también fue transladado a los cómics a través de una miniserie de tres números hecha por Archie Comics. Fue lo suficientemente popular para conseguir que se hiciese una segunda miniserie. Después de esto, no hubo más cómics oficiales de NiGHTS.

NiGHTS para Wii Sega lanzó en el 2007 NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams para la consola Wii de Nintendo, usa cuatro sistemas de controles, tres de los cuales hacen uso del sensor de movimiento de dicha consola y de las capacidades online WiiConnect 24 para modificar el clima de la sección llamada My Dream para que cambie según lo que muestra el Canal del Clima del Wii.

En cuanto el medidor de tiempo llegue a cero, y por tanto no se consiguió el objetivo de obtener el Ideya o de retornar al altar, NiGHTS desaparecerá en medio de su vuelo y el niño que estemos manejando caerá al suelo. Cualquier bola azul que NIGHTS llevara en el momento de acabarse el tiempo, se desperdigará por el mapa, obligando al niño a recoger las suficientes para destrozar la cárcel, hacerse con el Ideya (si aún no se había hecho) y retornar al altar donde contínua bailando NiGHTS: todo esto mientras el reloj despertador lo persigue amenazando el final del sueño. Como curiosidad, cabe añadir que si se acabase el tiempo antes de haber recuperado la Ideya correspondiente a la ronda y se vuelve al altar para intentar de nuevo la sintetización con NiGHTS, este no estará bailando, sino que estará flotando en el mismo en posición de descanso.

Christmas NiGHTS Christmas NiGHTS es una expansión del juego original, que aunque no requería éste para poder jugar, los poseedores del original obtenían un par de utilidades para poder disfrutar más de su NiGHTS Into Dreams....

Fue sacado a la venta en diciembre de 1996 en Japón como parte de un paquete navideño de Sega Saturn. El juego se regalaba junto a otros como Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition, además de venir como regalo junto a ciertos números de la revista oficial Sega Saturn Magazine y Next Generation Magazine. En el caso de los CD-ROMS que acompañaban a la Sega Saturn Magazine, no se daba la pequeña caja de cartón para guardarla sino una transparente de plástico. El juego también podía ser alquilado en Blockbuster Video por toda América. En el resto de Europa, no fue incluido con la revista oficial ya citada hasta diciembre del año siguiente, 1997.

El disco de Christmas NiGHTS contenía una demo jugable de uno de los primeros niveles del juego, Spring Valley. Al contrario que en el original, podía ser jugado tanto con Elliot como con Claris, y era una versión inversa ya que se alteraron los elementos siguiente una simetría de espejo. El juego empleaba el reloj interno de la Sega Saturn para cambiar el decorado del juego dependiendo de la fecha. Cuando dicho reloj llegaba al 1 de diciembre, el normalmente color verde del escenario se convertía totalmente en nieve blanca. El diseño general del nivel adoptaba también un estilo navideño, donde las cajas se convertían en regalos de navidad, los Nightopians se vestían como los elfos de Santa Claus, las cárceles de las Ideya se convertían en árboles de Navidad, etc.

También existían muchos otros extras desbloqueables, que le permitían al jugador experimentar con las diferentes canciones o su sistema "A-Life", modos de juego extra como una carrera contra el reloj en uno de los circuitos o la posibilidad de manejar a la mascota de Sega Sonic the Hedgehog.

Curiosidades
Reacción Cuando fue lanzado a la venta, NiGHTS Into Dreams... copó las listas de ventas de la Sega Saturn pero no consiguió atraer al gran público que consiguieron Super Mario 64 de la Nintendo 64, o Crash Bandicoot para la Playstation, ya que ambos fueron publicados en las mismas fechas aproximadamente. La mayoría de las críticas de las revistas especializadas en la Sega Saturn alabaron al juego, pero aquellas que se dedicaban a varias plataformas fueron más negativas.

De cualquier manera, el juego es hoy en día tratado como un clásico, y debido a su calidad y disponibilidad es uno de los títulos más recomendados para los jugadores que empiezan colecciones de juegos de Sega Saturn. NiGHTS suele aparecer en las listas de los mejores juegos de la historia en diversas páginas web y revistas. En una encuesta a los lectores de la revista Computer and Video Games en enero de 2000, apreció en décimoquinto lugar en una lista de los "100 mejores juegos" (justamente detrás de Super Mario 64). Otro ejemplo de la progresiva evolución de las críticas del juego se puede ver en la revista Edge: en su crítica original en 1996 le dio "solo" un 8 sobre 10, pero en el número de octubre de 2003 el personal de la revista colocó a NiGHTS en su lista de los diez mejores juegos de plataformas.

Cómics NiGHTS también fue transladado a los cómics a través de una miniserie de tres números hecha por Archie Comics. Fue lo suficientemente popular para conseguir que se hiciese una segunda miniserie. Después de esto, no hubo más cómics oficiales de NiGHTS.

NiGHTS para Wii Sega lanzó en el 2007 NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams para la consola Wii de Nintendo, usa cuatro sistemas de controles, tres de los cuales hacen uso del sensor de movimiento de dicha consola y de las capacidades online WiiConnect 24 para modificar el clima de la sección llamada My Dream para que cambie según lo que muestra el Canal del Clima del Wii.

SEGA nace en 1940 de la unión de las compañías: Service Games y Rosen Enterprises, Ltd. De la primera, se tomaría el nombre. Esta se dedicaba a la venta de gramolas para las bases militares americanas, mientras que la segunda era una empresa de importación de arte y otros productos fundada en Japón por Dave Rosen durante 1953. Rosen llevaba desde 1956 importando juegos recreativos y llegó a colocar 5.000 de ellos por todo el Japón, pero cada vez estaba más desencantado con las máquinas traídas desde Estados Unidos así que decidió fabricar sus propios juegos fusionándose con Service Games, de donde surgió SEGA Enterprises, Ltd.

SEGA debutó con Rifleman, un juego mecánico que simulaba tiroteos en el lejano oeste, y para 1967 ya exportaba juegos a los Estados Unidos. El primer éxito de la compañía fue Periscope (1968), un simulador de submarinos, y su último juego mecánico fue Jet Rocket (1970). A partir de ahí SEGA se dedicó a los juegos electrónicos y a las recreativas, produciendo de 1967 a 1979 un total de 140 juegos diferentes. En 1980 SEGA compró a Gremlin, un fabricante de máquinas recreativas, y se metió en el mundo de los videojuegos domésticos licenciando algunos de sus juegos. En esa época Gulf & Western's Paramount adquirió la compañía pero la vendió durante la crisis del videojuego, oportunidad que aprovechó Rosen junto con unos inversores japoneses para recuperar el mando.

Durante los años que SEGA había estado bajo el control de Gulf & Western's se lanzaron la SG-1000 y el SC-3000, dos sistemas nacidos con la idea de competir por el mercado doméstico pero que pasaron sin pena ni gloria. No fue hasta 1984 que SEGA hizo una apuesta en firme con la Mark III para llegar a todos los hogares, pero la popularidad de la NES acabó con cualquier tipo de esperanza. En 1986 SEGA remodeló su Mark III y la transformó en lo que se conoce como Sega Master System para entrar en los mercados americano y europeo. El resultado fue dispar y si bien en Estados Unidos no pudo plantar cara, en Europa consiguió un gran éxito llegando a vender más que la máquina de Nintendo en varios países, aunque no fue suficiente. En 1988 SEGA decidió apostar por la innovación y lanzó la tercera consola de 16 bits del mercado,(Intellivision, fue la primera y PC Engine/Turbografx la segunda) la Sega Megadrive, que volvió a ser un desastre en Japón. Aplastada por la PC Engine de NEC Corporation en oriente su salto a Estados Unidos y Europa parecía abocado al fracaso, pero en la navidad de 1989 la Megadrive (conocida en América como Sega Genesis) consiguió unas ventas espectaculares borrando a la PC Engine del mercado occidental.

Durante los siguientes años la Megadrive compitió directamente con la 16 bits de Nintendo, la Super Nintendo, y recibió curiosos periféricos que no alcanzaron el éxito como el Sega MegaCD o el Sega 32X, además sus ventas fueron inferiores a las del sistema de Nintendo. Mientras tanto SEGA se había labrado un gran prestigio en el mundo de los arcades con juegos tan famosos como Out Run, Shinobi, Afterburner, Virtua Racing o Virtua Fighter cuyas conversiones se transformaban siempre en grandes éxitos. A SEGA ya solo le quedaban dos cosas por hacer, entrar en el mercado de las consolas portátiles y conseguir una mascota que rivalizara con Mario. Lo consiguió con el archiconocido erizo azul Sonic the Hedgehog, que se convirtió en estandarte de la compañía, y entro en el negocio de las consolas portatiles gracias a la Game Gear, una potente consola en color técnicamente muy superior a la Game Boy de Nintendo pero que cayó en el olvido debido a la escasa duración de sus baterías. Como ya hiciera con los 16 bits SEGA fue la primera en pasar a los 32 bits con su Sega Saturn, y por primera vez se vio recompensada en Japón con unas ventas espectaculares durante su lanzamiento en 1994. Desgraciadamente en el resto del mundo la acogida fue algo más fría y rápidamente fue superada en ventas por la PlayStation de Sony. El resultado fue que a finales de 1997 la consola ya casi había desaparecido, manteniéndose únicamente en Japón hasta 1999 gracias a juegos basados en las licencias de diferentes mangas.

Tras la decepcionante historia de la Saturn SEGA se encontraba en una grave crisis financiera, pero aun tuvo tiempo de fabricar una última consola antes de abandonar este mercado. La Dreamcast vio la luz en 1998, llegando a Europa y Estados Unidos en 1999, la consola de 128 bits era una apuesta a doble o nada, pero SEGA volvió a perder la partida. Los usuarios no se vieron atraídos por la potencia de la nueva consola y permanecieron fieles a la PlayStation o decidieron esperar a la salida de la nueva PlayStation 2 para poner un pie en los 128 bits. Finalmente SEGA dejó de dar apoyo oficial a la consola a principios de 2001, pero continuó lanzando juegos para ella siendo el último Puyo Pop Fever en 2004 (actualmente se siguen lanzando algunos juegos para la consola, aunque sólo esporádicamente).

SEGA nace en 1940 de la unión de las compañías: Service Games y Rosen Enterprises, Ltd. De la primera, se tomaría el nombre. Esta se dedicaba a la venta de gramolas para las bases militares americanas, mientras que la segunda era una empresa de importación de arte y otros productos fundada en Japón por Dave Rosen durante 1953. Rosen llevaba desde 1956 importando juegos recreativos y llegó a colocar 5.000 de ellos por todo el Japón, pero cada vez estaba más desencantado con las máquinas traídas desde Estados Unidos así que decidió fabricar sus propios juegos fusionándose con Service Games, de donde surgió SEGA Enterprises, Ltd.

SEGA debutó con Rifleman, un juego mecánico que simulaba tiroteos en el lejano oeste, y para 1967 ya exportaba juegos a los Estados Unidos. El primer éxito de la compañía fue Periscope (1968), un simulador de submarinos, y su último juego mecánico fue Jet Rocket (1970). A partir de ahí SEGA se dedicó a los juegos electrónicos y a las recreativas, produciendo de 1967 a 1979 un total de 140 juegos diferentes. En 1980 SEGA compró a Gremlin, un fabricante de máquinas recreativas, y se metió en el mundo de los videojuegos domésticos licenciando algunos de sus juegos. En esa época Gulf & Western's Paramount adquirió la compañía pero la vendió durante la crisis del videojuego, oportunidad que aprovechó Rosen junto con unos inversores japoneses para recuperar el mando.

Durante los años que SEGA había estado bajo el control de Gulf & Western's se lanzaron la SG-1000 y el SC-3000, dos sistemas nacidos con la idea de competir por el mercado doméstico pero que pasaron sin pena ni gloria. No fue hasta 1984 que SEGA hizo una apuesta en firme con la Mark III para llegar a todos los hogares, pero la popularidad de la NES acabó con cualquier tipo de esperanza. En 1986 SEGA remodeló su Mark III y la transformó en lo que se conoce como Sega Master System para entrar en los mercados americano y europeo. El resultado fue dispar y si bien en Estados Unidos no pudo plantar cara, en Europa consiguió un gran éxito llegando a vender más que la máquina de Nintendo en varios países, aunque no fue suficiente. En 1988 SEGA decidió apostar por la innovación y lanzó la tercera consola de 16 bits del mercado,(Intellivision, fue la primera y PC Engine/Turbografx la segunda) la Sega Megadrive, que volvió a ser un desastre en Japón. Aplastada por la PC Engine de NEC Corporation en oriente su salto a Estados Unidos y Europa parecía abocado al fracaso, pero en la navidad de 1989 la Megadrive (conocida en América como Sega Genesis) consiguió unas ventas espectaculares borrando a la PC Engine del mercado occidental.

Durante los siguientes años la Megadrive compitió directamente con la 16 bits de Nintendo, la Super Nintendo, y recibió curiosos periféricos que no alcanzaron el éxito como el Sega MegaCD o el Sega 32X, además sus ventas fueron inferiores a las del sistema de Nintendo. Mientras tanto SEGA se había labrado un gran prestigio en el mundo de los arcades con juegos tan famosos como Out Run, Shinobi, Afterburner, Virtua Racing o Virtua Fighter cuyas conversiones se transformaban siempre en grandes éxitos. A SEGA ya solo le quedaban dos cosas por hacer, entrar en el mercado de las consolas portátiles y conseguir una mascota que rivalizara con Mario. Lo consiguió con el archiconocido erizo azul Sonic the Hedgehog, que se convirtió en estandarte de la compañía, y entro en el negocio de las consolas portatiles gracias a la Game Gear, una potente consola en color técnicamente muy superior a la Game Boy de Nintendo pero que cayó en el olvido debido a la escasa duración de sus baterías. Como ya hiciera con los 16 bits SEGA fue la primera en pasar a los 32 bits con su Sega Saturn, y por primera vez se vio recompensada en Japón con unas ventas espectaculares durante su lanzamiento en 1994. Desgraciadamente en el resto del mundo la acogida fue algo más fría y rápidamente fue superada en ventas por la PlayStation de Sony. El resultado fue que a finales de 1997 la consola ya casi había desaparecido, manteniéndose únicamente en Japón hasta 1999 gracias a juegos basados en las licencias de diferentes mangas.

Tras la decepcionante historia de la Saturn SEGA se encontraba en una grave crisis financiera, pero aun tuvo tiempo de fabricar una última consola antes de abandonar este mercado. La Dreamcast vio la luz en 1998, llegando a Europa y Estados Unidos en 1999, la consola de 128 bits era una apuesta a doble o nada, pero SEGA volvió a perder la partida. Los usuarios no se vieron atraídos por la potencia de la nueva consola y permanecieron fieles a la PlayStation o decidieron esperar a la salida de la nueva PlayStation 2 para poner un pie en los 128 bits. Finalmente SEGA dejó de dar apoyo oficial a la consola a principios de 2001, pero continuó lanzando juegos para ella siendo el último Puyo Pop Fever en 2004 (actualmente se siguen lanzando algunos juegos para la consola, aunque sólo esporádicamente).
