Puyo Puyo is quickly becoming the Madden of Japanese puzzle games. It seems like every year Sega finds some excuse to release yet another entry in its jellybean-inspired falling blocks series. This year's excuse? Apparently, it's the series' 15th anniversary. 

For the most part, this is just like all the other Puyo Puyo games out there, only now it's playable with the Wiimote. You hold the Wiimote horizontally and play with the D-pad and 1 and 2 buttons. Alternatively, you can use the Classic controller or GameCube controller. 

The best part about the game, and the main reason why it's worth a look even if you already have the Virtual Console version, is that it combines many of the twists that Sega has slipped into the series over the years. You'll find variations ranging from the original Puyo Puyo to the recent Puyo Puyo Fever, selectable via roulette prior to the start of a battle. 

Some of the game types make the gameplay feel completely different, including one mode where the board flips over every ten seconds. Try planning combos like that! Personally, I like the Dekapuyo mode, where the pieces are four times their normal size. 

Sega's also equipped the game with a few multiplayer modes. Up to four players can compete against one-another, or you can split into teams and gang up on a single player. 

The Wiimote's waggle capabilities are put to use in one of the two player modes, where you control the action without any buttons. Holding the Wiimote like a pointer, you angle left or right to move your pieces, twist left or right to rotate, and swing down to make the pieces fall. 

While the Waggle mode is a neat little diversion, Puyo Puyo! doesn't really need anything but standard controls to be a worthy title, especially with all the features that Sega has packed in. There's bound to be another version in the near future (perhaps in time for the 16th anniversary), but for now, if you want some quality Puyo Puyo on your Wii, the import awaits.
